Speaker Bios

Martin Bell Martin Bell has been a freelance computer consultant in the UK for over 23 years. He has worked on many relational database systems and since the 1998 has specialized in SQL Server. He was first awarded Microsoft MVP (SQL Server) status in June 2003. He runs the Scottish Area meetings of the UK SQL Server User Group and is a founding organiser of the SQLBits Community Conferences.
Barry Carr Barry Carr has been developing software for since 1987. He taught himself to program using a BBC micro equipped with the Acorn Pascal ROMS and a copy of Findlay and Watts' Pascal: An Introduction to Methodical Programming, sadly, now out of print. Barry's first professional coding job was using a 4GL called Dataflex on ICL Quattros (yes, it was as bad as it sounds). From here, Barry went on to write software for some of the UK best known companies in a wide range of business sectors, including: Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Oil and Gas, Banking, Accounting, Legal Accounting, Public Sector and currently for the Mining and Geology sector. Barry has also developed and sold his own software components to other software developers. Always keen to keep his skills current, Barry devotes a lot of his personal time to technical development as well as keeping abreast of the current trends in the world of software development. Barry is also active in the software development community and has had several of his articles and book reviews published on the web and one article published in print. Barry was also one of the founding members of Scottish Developers. He is also one of the founder members of Northeast of Scotland .NET user group. When he isn't coding, Barry likes to spend his time with photography, reading, unashamedly listening to progressive rock, jazz and early music (especially whilst coding).
Andy Chambers Andy Chambers' introduction to computing came through the MSc IT course at Glasgow University. That got him started on Java and Linux and now he spends his days working on systems that help pharmaceutical companies keep control over their clinical data management.
Barry Dorrans Barry Dorrans has spent 15 years cutting code, starting with mainframes, through DOS, Visual C and MFC before finally ending up on the .NET platform. His experience has ranged from banking systems to Europe's largest streaming network. He now mentors developers through .NET migrations and Expert Witness services with Charteris plc.
Richard Fennell Richard Fennell is a founding Director of Black Marble, a Microsoft Gold partner based in Yorkshire. He is a regular speaker at community events, speaking at SQLBits, DDD3, 4, 5 & 6 as well as variety of user groups and free events run by his company. He has a degree in Computer Science, is a Member of the BCS, a Chartered IT professional and Chartered Engineer as well as holding MCSD.NET and MCAD accreditations.
Ben Hall Ben Hall is a UK C# developer/tester who enjoys all aspects of the development lifecycle and technology in general. During the day Ben works for Red Gate Software as a Test Engineer. At night, Ben is a MbUnit Core Commit Member, helping out on the project whenever possible. Ben has also gained his Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) in Web Applications and is a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) in Administrating Windows XP.
Beverley Hatchard Starting in February 2008 I will be back at Uni to get my PhD, while working part time. While my children are growing up I enjoy answering questions at www.windrivers.com forums and chat. Building the odd specialist machine or advising customers on which [insert pc manufacturer here] would cover their envisaged requirements. I advise people and small businesses on creating backup strategies, removing spyware and viruses, home and small office networking and web page creation. During the 1990s I created and maintained dBase IV menu driven systems and got into building PCs and networks from scratch. 1986-1990 I was busy specifiing a multi-million pound EPoS and stock system while being a network admin for a small head office. Prior to 1986 I was working on the sales, admin and management side of MultiBroadcast who were a major television rental company in the UK.
Chris Hay Chris is regularly caught by his wife browsing internet sites at 2.00am in the morning. Sadly he is always looking at .NET sites rather than the haunts frequented by his peers. He has worked on various large projects and is specialised in C#, ASP.NET, AJAX, SQL and various other acronymns. Having always tried to keep at the front of the technology curve, i guess it is time to share that knowledge around a little. Robert Hogg Robert Hogg is the Senior Architect and Managing Director of Black Marble Limited, a collaborative software solutions company based in the UK.
A regular presenter at IT and Developer events throughout the UK, Robert has presented at a Microsoft Research Conference on the subject of Teaching Artificial Intelligence Programming using C# .NET and in 2007, Robert presented at TechEd Europe Developers on "Implementing Enterprise Service Bus using Microsoft BizTalk Server".
In 2007, Robert received MVP for Microsoft Visual Studio, Architect. He is a Member of the British Computer Society (MBCS) and is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and a Microsoft Certified Solution Developer for .NET.
Additionally Robert is involved with a series of community projects from running events aimed at raising general IT/development expertise in the North of England and supporting Academic adoption of .NET. Recently a team of students that Robert mentored in their final year at Hull University won the 2007 UK Imagine cup for producing a tool to teach children to program and Robert and the Team went to the world finals in Korea.
Satya SK Jayanty Knowledge is the power and you will gain by sharing it; I'm an Independent Database expert, with over 16+ years of experience in application designing, developing and managing database technologies using industry famous technologies & software. I have been working with SQL Server since version 4.2 and active member & moderator in Technet, MSDN, SQL-Server-Performance.com forums/websites and also Technical Writer for http://www.sql-server-performance.com website. I'm a regular speaker and will volunteer (Ask The Experts) at SQL Server events such as SQLPASS, Tech-ed, SQLBits etc. and have a honour of Microsoft MVP in SQL Server technologies. Sune Kaae Sune Kaae is currently Technical Architect and Discipline Lead for Web Development with interactive agency MRM Worldwide - a London-based Microsoft Gold Certified partner and member of McCann WorldGroup.
Sune has been delivering websites and –applications since ’99, working for leading agencies in Copenhagen and London as a developer, architect and technical project manager. He holds MCAD, MCPD and MCTS-SharePoint certifications he is a member of British Computer Society and has a degree in Computer Science from University College London.
For the last 3 years he has worked on projects for Microsoft, Intel and Nestle to deliver websites, applications and Flash-based games, collaborating with broad teams of planners, user experience architects, designers, editorial staff and QA. Recent adoption of Agile methodologies has meant increased focus on frequent releases and a need for better and more efficient testing.
Ben Lamb Ben's been writing business applications since the days of Visual Basic 2.0. Most recently using the .NET platform to develop trading systems for investment banks.
Colin Angus Mackay Colin is a Microsoft MVP (C#) and MCSD from Edinburgh, Scotland. He has worked with Microsoft Visual C++ since about Version 2.1 and has been playing with the .NET Framework and C# since it was in beta but has been using it commercially since late 2002. He originally started programming when he was about 9 years old, on a Sinclair ZX Spectrum with an amazing 48K memory! Natuarally he went for a computing degree. After leaving university he co-founded a software company that developed a GIS product but is now working for an insurance company in Glasgow. He is very active in the user community. He's a core member of Scottish Developers, and a Member of the BCS as well as being the Vice President of Education of the Glasgow South Side Branch of Toastmasters International.
James Mann James Mann is a Developer at Black Marble Limited, a collaborative software solutions company based in the UK. A graduate of Hull University, James has spoken at community events aimed at raising general IT/development expertise in the North of England.
Ged Mead

Ged Mead has been a Microsoft Visual Developer MVP since 2004. He has now swapped his commuter's season ticket for a more relaxing way of life.  Based in a lochside cottage in southwest Scotland, he keeps himself occupied helping to run the vbCity and devCity web sites, writing articles, working on personal projects and tutoring online courses for VB developers. He occasionally ventures out into the real world to remind himself how overrated it really is and how little he misses it! Ged is particularly enthusiastic about Windows Presentation Foundation and works to encourage developers to get past their natural reluctance to set out on yet another steep learning curve. His view is that the multi-layered, sophisticated  User Interfaces now achievable with WPF are well worth the journey.

Allan Mitchell Allan is the joint owner of Konesans Ltd, a small UK based consultancy specializing in SQL Server, and most importantly SQL Server Integration Services. Having been working with SQL Server from 6.5 onwards he has extensive experience in many aspects of SQL Server, but now focuses on the BI suite of tools. He is a SQL Server MVP, a frequent poster on the MS SSIS/DTS newsgroups as well as helping to run the sqldts.com and sqlis.com resource sites.
Daniel Moth Daniel Moth has significant industry experience, holds a BSc in Computing for Business as well as an MSc with Distinction in Object Oriented Software technology, and he has been working with .NET since the first public beta in 2000. Daniel was awarded the Most Valuable Professional (MVP) award for his community contributions in 2004 and still enjoys helping others wherever he can, both online and offline. In his spare time he loves to travel around the world, be it on city breaks, lazing on the beach or scuba diving the oceans.
Abid Quereshi Abid has a degree in Mechatronics engineering from the University of Waterloo in Canada. He also has a degree in Education from the University of Toronto. He has been developing enterprise applications for the past seven years. He has been involved with aspects of software development in projects ranging from real-time embedded systems to GUI design. He has worked for a number of companies including Cisco and Honeywell. His consulting experiences have taken him to Canada, the U.S., the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East.
Tony Rogerson Tony started his IT career in 1986 coding on the IBM mainframe programming in such languages as Application System, PL/1, CICS, DB2, System W. Around 1994 he moved into the client/server environment using Visual Basic and C++, Oracle at first and then Microsoft SQL Server, he primarily does SQL Server consultancy but also knows VB.NET and C# but is really SQL Server focused.Tony has been an independent consultant since 1999 based in Harpenden - Hertfordshire. He has a broad client base from a Research Fellow right the way through to enterprise covering a lot of business areas, Banking (Retail, Investment), Retail, Knowledge Management, Manufacturing, Motor Racing, Web Industries and a ton more I don't even know how to classify! In 1998 he founded the UK SQL Server Community (http://sqlserverfaq.com) a community of over 9,000 members. He also co runs SQLBlogcasts.COM with Simon Sabin.
Grant Ronald Grant Ronald is a Group Product Manager working for the Application Development Tools group responsible for Oracle's Application Development Tools where he has a focus on opening up the Java platform to Oracle's PL/SQL install base. Grant joined Oracle in 1997, inititally supporting Oracles' PL/SQL development tools Forms and Reports then moved to Product Management where he was responsible for the development of Oracle Forms and JDeveloper. Prior to joining Oracle Grant spent seven years at EDS in various development roles. Grant has a BSc. in Computing Science and has been working in the IT Industry since 1989.
Seb Rose Seb is a software contractor specialising in getting the job done in some of the most hostile working environments, including banks, pension providers and manufacturers. He works with whatever technology is prescribed by the client, which has recently been mainly C# and Java, and have been doing so (on and off) since 1985. He has written for journals, presented sessions at conferences and enjoys spouting about the joys of TDD and DI.
Karl Shifflett Karl is a software architect, Code Project MVP and MCAD from Charlotte, North Carolina. He has been designing & developing business applications since 1989 and transitioned to .NET in March of 2003. In April of 2007 he joined the list of WPF and Microsoft Expression fanatics & evangelists. Currently working on new full featured City Government and Utility Billing WPF product. On the weekends he is finishing a cool multi-player WPF game scheduled for release 2nd quarter 2008. Karl is an exciting and enthusiastic speaker who is a regular at the Enterprise Developers Guild events, Raleigh Code Camps and has presented in Columbia, SC. He is a member of Team Mole that delivered Mole Visualizer For Visual Studio to the world.
Gary Short

Gary Short was employed as a canoeist, but was presumed dead after disappearing under mysterious circumstances, only to reappear 5 years later. Gary had used this time to secretly re-train as a software Jedi and now plies his trade throughout the known galaxies, where he sells his skills to the highest bidder. Outside of his dog, his laptop is his best friend; inside of his dog, it's too dark to use it.

Guy Smith-Ferrier Guy is an MVP in ASP.NET. He is the author of ".NET Internationalization" published by Addison-Wesley (http://www.dotneti18n.com). He is a Microsoft Certified Professional, developer, author, trainer and speaker, has spoken at many European and US conferences, is the winner of the NxtGen Best Presentation 2006/2007, has been voted best speaker three times and is an INETA Speaker. He runs The .NET Developer Network (http://www.dotnetdevnet.com), a free .NET user group in the South West of England.
Mat Steeples Mat Steeples is a Developer at Black Marble Limited, a collaborative software solutions company based in the UK. A graduate of Hull University, James has spoken at community events aimed at raising general IT/development expertise in the North of England. In addition, Mat was part of the UK Team of Students that won the UK leg of the Imagine Cup in 2007.
Alex Stevenson Dr. Alex Stevenson started his career (1956) in engineering-industry production management before joining IBM as a computer salesman; followed by a period as a senior consultant with the Hoskyns Group. For 20 years from 1967 was head IT specialist with the Distillers Group, managing a large corporate level IT function having both advisory and implementation responsibilities. National recognition during that period for leading the creation of a highly integrated set of system development, project management and training practices relating to the computer system development process; all of which were further integrated with a Quality Management System. Advisor to HM Government on IT Standards' Priorities and the ALVEY Advanced IT Programme.
Set up (1987) as an Independent IT Consultant trading as Alex Stevenson Associates and participated in a network of contracting professionals. Registered Consultant under DTI's Enterprise Initiative Scheme. In 2000 started developing education and training services centred upon object technology and the Java platform. Currently operating as a subcontractor supplying education modules for inclusion in the education/training courses offered by the larger education/training providers. The current offerings target: i) the Java community; ii) system development at the Enterprise Application complexity-level; iii) the development cycle stage dealing with the creation of a functional/evolutionary prototype.
Oliver Sturm Oliver Sturm is an experienced software architect, developer, trainer and author, with a strong background in various different fields including system and framework architecture and design, process modeling and user interface design. He is a C# MVP and he works for Developer Express as a Technical Evangelist and Lead Program Manager for the Frameworks Division.
Brian Swan Brian Swan is an Agile programmer and coach, and has extensive experience in both the technical and the management aspects of Agile. He has successfully led a variety of teams transitioning to Agile, and trained both developers and managers in Agile thinking and practice.
Tom Wardill Tom Wardill Tom is a Developer at Black Marble Limited, a collaborative software solutions company based in the UK. Tom has spoken at Community Events in the North of England about Silverlight and the future of .NET web development.
Andrew Williams Andrew "HandyAndE" Williams is a Software Engineer with five years experience developing server and client based Java applications. After graduating from the University of Edinburgh he became heavily involved with the open source movement working on projects at Sourceforge, The Codehaus and The Apache Software Foundation. In 2007 he helped to found Sonatype Inc. (a company built to support the Maven project), created the Java User Group Scotland and launched Heads Up Development.
